What is Data Science for me?

It is the process of using data to understand different things, to understand the world.

Data science is the art of uncovering the insights and trends that are hiding behind data. You can say its like storytelling to generate insight. And with these insights, you can make decisions for a company or an institution. “Data science is a field about processes and systems to extract data from various forms of whether it is unstructured or structured form.” 

Data science has always fascinated me before I even knew what it really was. I would see my elder brother work with data and analyze it with such ease that it would look like magic. How could one deal with such a large data so easily?

Now why do we need Data Science in today’s world?

In the past, the data that we had was mainly structured and small in size, which could be analyzed by using the simple analysis tools. But today most of our data is unstructured or semi-structured (More than 80% data is unstructured.)

Dealing with huge amount of unstructured data has only been possible due to data science and has helped in so many other real life applications such as understand the precise requirements of your customers from the existing data like the customer’s past browsing history, purchase history, age and income and build recommendation systems accordingly; weather forecasting using the data from ships, aircrafts, radars, satellites which can be collected and analyzed to build models that could help in predicting the occurrence of any natural calamities and help save many precious lives.

The above examples are just the tip of iceberg. Data science is used in a ton of other applications and has made life so much easier. No wonder the majority of students oday aspire to be a Data Scientist.
